BALLERS AT THE BATTERY
Ballers Philadelphia is a 55,000 square foot social sports and wellness club located in the historic Turbine Hall of The Battery, a former Philadelphia Electric Company (PECO) power plant originally constructed in 1921. This voluminous space once housed the very turbines that converted steam into electricity for much of Philadelphia.
Today, the space is conceived as a next-generation third space blending racquet and social sports with wellness and a full restaurant and bar. On the athletic side, It incorporates a turf futsal pitch, padel and pickleball courts, golf simulators and putting green, and squash courts. The bar and restaurant overlook the futsal pitch.
The design unequivocally preserves the raw nature of the space characterized by massive one-hundred year old reinforced concrete piers and archways culminating in a soaring vault punctuated by light-filled clerestories. Spatial interventions, such as the bar, restaurant, and entry sequence utilize a combination of steel, reclaimed timber, and glass block to create dramatic counterpoint to the existing space’s light filled vault.
